LESI successfully treated canola processing waste water using EOX removing TSS, oils/grease and bacteria, reducing BOD to below discharge criteria.
The Situation
Canola is the world’s most important oilseed. Canada is a major producer of the world’s canola seeds. With over 45% processing capacity in Canada, which equates to over 10 million tonnes processed each year. The process to turn the canola seed into high quality oil and meal is similar to processing other oil seeds, including cleaning, heating, cooking, pressing and refining. With this processing, waste streams such as water are produced and must be disposed of. This waste stream is often high in total suspended solids, oil and grease as well as being biologically active. This is a major cost to processing this valuable commodity.
The Solution
We have successfully treated the oilseed waste water stream using EOX technology. As this type of waste stream is found in all oilseed processing, the treatment using EOX reducing the significant cost of disposal. The EOX treatment significantly reduced the TSS, eliminated oil and grease, as well as reduced the BOD to below criteria. This marks a significant cost reduction in disposal costs for the processing of this oilseed.
The Results
The oilseed waste water treatment was successfully complete using the EOX treatment. With highly biological waste streams, EOX was able to break the biofilm, significantly reducing the BOD to below criteria for disposal. The TSS and oil and grease were also reduced and removed from the sample.
